Well, I'm here to tell you that we've got a kid who is on the low end of the sleeping spectrum. According to "The Book", infants his age will sleep anywhere from 20 hours a day to 8 hours a day. Some kids are heavy sleepers. others aren't. Well, for better or worse, Gavin here is much closer to the lower end of the spectrum.
I don't think he got any naps yesterday. We wear him alot - either in the sling or the bjorn - and he-ll close his eyes and it seems like he's falling asleep. So we put him down horizontally, and boom - he's awake. And the nights? He sleeps soundly from, oh say, 11pm to 2 am. But throughout the rest of the night, it's maybe an hour here or an hour there...
So is it us? Maybe. But we're also fairly sure he suffers from infant reflux that keeps him awake long after a feeding. And he is also feeding all the time these days (have you noticed in the pictures that he is getting chubby cheeks?). In any case, we're counting on the advice from the book that he'll "grow out of it" (with in the next year - yikes!)

Morning Playtime

Yep, a routine is being established, even if it does include fussiness from about 2am to 4:30am - like last night (which is Dad's shift...). The adorable routine is this, which is what Sean woke up to find at about 9am this morning. Mom and baby playing on the play quilt that Grandmother Sue made for him. He is definitely going to be an early morning baby, but it is a pleasure now that he is starting to react and play with us!

Well, Sean is still working on getting those pictures up from the March 5 boat-baby shower. I want to blame it on software issues, but I'm sure its more of a case of Daddy-not-understanding-software issues. Anyway, watch this space for more to come.
Sunday was one of the laziest days on record, out of a long record of lazy days. While Sean was feeding Gavin at about 3am Sunday morning, the cap wasn't screwed on the milk bottle well enough (Daddy-not-understanding-hardware issues) and I leaked the last of the night's milk supply all over little Gavin before I noticed the problem. So aside from a major clothes changing when he was supposed to be asleep, we had to wake mom for a direct feed, which is a little more work for everyone and everyone was then awake. So Sunday turned into a very, very lazy day because everyone was wrecked.
And now its 2 am and Dad and Gavin are getting a quick feed in (milk bottle cap is secure, thanks for asking...). I don't have any new pictures to upload, but maybe I can search around for a past classic at the 4am feed...

NEWS FLASH!!!!

Go to http://sailwhore.blogspot.com/ RIGHT NOW!! (or follow the link thru Lightn' Up's web page) for a picture of Gavin in the knitted hat that he received at the March 5th Lightn' Up Baby Shower! Yes, he looks like the king of Imperial Margarine. (Dad has video of that night's party, but is still working on retrieving my stills.
Gary Clifford, owner and Admiral of Lightn' Up, ordered an official baby crew sweater, hat and blanket be knitted in honor of the first new member being added to the crew (via birth into the fleet, anyway) in a long time. They are official boat color red and black and with the number 3. They are awesome. Watch this space - I will get my pictures or video posted immediately!!!

He looks like the Heismen Trophy character in this shot...

Wow, What a day we've had... Last night was a rough night. Gavin woke up at about 2:45 for a feed, and unfortunately never really went back down to a solid sleep longer than an hour. Joyce and I took turns walking around with him, and brought him to bed for awhile, but he (and we) didn't sleep much last night...
So we got up at, oh, well, around noon really. We went for a long walk downtown, he got a shower, we fed him in the garden while Sean did some gardening, and the picture above is of him entertaining us while he was waking up from a late afternoon nap (which we didn't get). Oh well, thank God its Saturday.
And so our Saturday night begins. It'll be an early dinner I can tell, and maybe a movie rental, and then the "night" begins. We fear the night now...
Shower

Whew. Well, we hope this site is getting too racey for you..., but here's a moment captured that needs to be shared. Sometimes its easy to hand him off to the person in the shower for a quick rinse when getting a diaper change, and that's what happened today.
Look at that little face: Ever wonder what thoughts are going thru a newborns brain at any particular moment? Is that fear, or wonder, or enjoyment (or all) going thru his little mind.... He was like that the entire time in the shower.

Well, it dawned dry and somewhat cloud-free in the sky this morning, the first dry weather we've had in quite awhile. 'Course it's only supposed to be dry thru Saturday, then another storm is coming in. We are soooo ready for spring to start so we can get this kid (and ourselves) out into the world more...
Last night was a pretty good night. Gavin slept well with only a feeding at 11pm, 2am-ish and again at 5am-ish - but he went back to sleep after the 5am feed!!! Mom and Dad got to sleep into about 9am today. Yep, this morning dawned just grand in our book.
Today's picture is actually from last week, from a bath time in our kitchen sink. He is definitely starting to like bath time more and more.

Well, good morning. It was an ok night last night. Gavin was up for a feed at 2 am and again at about 5 am, and he really didn't ever go back to sleep after that. We gave him the last feed of the night at about 11pm last night. That's about the routine right now. So now, Dad is up learning more on how to keep this blog going. Little Gavin was awake and playing/fussing in the "Moses Basket" for awhile, but is now asleep on my chest in the bjorn. Sheesh. All these things and products I didn't know about until now...
So did I mention that he went in for a weigh-in on Monday and he came in at 7lbs, 10oz. Not bad considering he put on 8oz. in 7 days - he's supposed to be gaining about an ounce a day right now. Side note: We figured out that we're putting into him about 24oz to 28oz of milk a day, and one ounce is sticking.... You can do the math what happens to the rest.
Well, continue to check this space. Dad and mom will get better at using it, I promise.

The Blog has begun!
Hello All. This is the beginning of Gavin's blog, as told by his parents, Joyce and Sean, who have had a couple of beers at the time of this creation. The blog's creation, not Gavins. Well, maybe Gavins too. But this is about the blog.
When he wakes up...
